A new type of coin bank has just come out where an animated person is depicted in a room on the outside of the bank and that person goes through various life stages as coins are added over time.
I guess this is the digital version of those old style mechanical coin banks that would perform some sort of stunt with the coin to deposit it in the bank. I had one when I was a kid that was electric with some sort of skeleton hand that came out quickly to snatch the coin.
The product is of Japanese origin and follows on the previous introduction last decade of digital pets like Tamagotchi, a little egg shaped gizmo that you fed and cleaned up after electronically to extend its life.
Here's a news item about the bank:
"Bank of Life"

A modern item for the argyrothecologically inclined...

(argyrothecologist - n: someone who collects money-boxes, particularly mechanically operated ones.)

A new modern twist to an old idea. It would be fun to see in operation.

I lived in Japan for a year and absolutely loved it. They come up with the craziest ideas! My username means "unicycle" in Japanese.

I don't own any mechanical banks, but I have always been fascinated with them.

Wow, that's really cool. I want one now, too bad I'm broke...

Actually, on second thought, that would be useless to me because I don't have any yen. Maybe if they made one that took US coins...

I wonder how much you have to add before you move out of your parents basement. Maybe I should ask mine."Hey, Dad!".
