I'll be posting a more in-depth review of the Baltimore show elsewhere, so I won't go into much detail here. However, if you wanted higher-end copper there, you needed to go see Chris McCawley. He had some real objects of lust in his cases, some of them worth 5 figures, and most of them into 4.

Among the lower-priced "nice" stuff he had was the coin I was interested in. I visited his booth early, during the first lap I made of the place to take notes on coins I wanted to review later. Even though I wasn't looking at his more valuable (and theoretically more profitable) pieces, he took the time to go through his stuff and find one I liked. I wanted a specific coin, he had one, and in the process of selecting it he made me feel like I was ready to spend $100,000 on him.

So, I made my tour of the place, and 3 hours later, returned to his booth. He remembered me immediately and grabbed the coin we talked about. Although he didn't know me from Adam, and I didn't present a particularly reputable appearance in my faded jeans, he took my credit card and let me walk away with a coin that can't be had for less than $500 in a Heritage auction. At a price considerably less than $500, I might add.

So, this thread is for you, Chris. You made a friend yesterday.

Oh, yeah. The coin.

Great story and one I wish all dealers would read! Beautiful coin and sweet rich brown color. There's just something about large cents that has grabbed me since I started collecting coins. These Coins and my Bust halves are the only coins that I had to sell off that I really miss. I am just starting to re-build my L/C's and Bust collections. I am waiting for an 1802 and 1814 (VF30 and VF25 respectively) that I should be picking up next week. Dave you snagged a real beauty and it sounds like you got a great price as well! Way to go!!!! He's out of Texas, so I guess it would be safe to assume he makes the circuit. I don't believe he has a Web presence, although I'll be emailing him a link to this thread.

I had figured my personal record for "most spent on a coin" would fall at this show - that's a problematic attitude because it could lead to spending money one shouldn't, but I think I did OK. And, yes, the record fell.

Wow. The amazing part of that story (besides you setting a new personal record) is that you left the table and returning 3 hours later and the coin was still there. You should be playing lotto with that kind of luck.

Glad I could help, SuperDave. :) When you said he was from Texas, I figured I could find him. That's home, for me. :D

I knew I recognized that name from EAC. Thanks so much for posting about your experience with him.

I have just sent him the following email:

Hi Chris,

I am an EAC member and also own the Coin Community forums. Dave Barker (Superdave) on our forums and one of our moderators, purchased a coin from you at the Baltimore show that he is very pleased with. He could not say enough about your service and how pleased he is with the coin and your treatment of him. He has posted on our forum sharing his purchase and his experience with our members. Here is a link to the topic if you have time to look at it.

As a result, I would like to purchase the following coin from you if you still have it available. You have quite a number of coins that I would love to buy, but my collection funds are limited and I am not buying this for resale. :-) If this coin is not available, but you have something similar in the same price range, please let me know.

1798 S-181 R3 VG7
$165.00
Sharper with very fine granularity. Only a few contact marks including a dull nick on the shoulder. and a couple lighter ones in the field. Dull reddish steel and chocolate brown. M-LDS, Breen state III late with reverse rotated 40 degrees CCW.

I am an EAC member and am very happy that the EAC has sellers like you to represent them. Please email me when you get a chance to let me know if this coin is available and how you would like payment.

That's a wonderful thing, Susan. I'm sure you're going to be pleased with that coin. I've already emailed him a link to this thread, though, as well as the one in the Grading forum.

Wow. I took a look at that coin, Susan. He's obviously grading to EAC standards. I guess I know where I'll be filling out my 7070 copper from.

For coppers that I would collect, not sell, I would only buy from an EAC dealer sight unseen. I really like the EAC standards and it's nice to know that I will get exactly what I expect. While I don't hope to have an extensive copper collection, I do really like the early dates. This is going to look very nice displayed in my library (assuming he didn't sell it at the show).

Wish I had come across his site before buying the copper pieces for my type set. He has really nice coins.
