harrison2 Pillar of the Community Mexico 1304 Posts	Posted 11/15/2011 1:04 pm So here it goes. I picked this up for nothing and it has proven to be a bit of a mystery. It's Mexican, Early Republic, and dime sized. The denomination and date are missing, but the shape of the eagle's wing should help ID which series this comes from...except I can NOT find a match! All the wings seem to point inward and down while this one points outward and maybe a bit upward. Ideas? Report this Post to the Staff

Westwood Arms Pillar of the Community United States 684 Posts	Posted 11/15/2011 4:17 pm My guess is that it is a Mexico 1/2 real 1834-42 Guanajuato mint (assayer PJ) that somebody cut in half. In this shape it should weigh about 0.7 gm, the diameter, or wide part, should be about 16 mm. Report this Post to the Staff

It DOES look to be a VERY old break. As a matter of fact, I understand that it is a metal detector find that I picked up not far from Guanajuato itself. I just saw Duane the other day...this piece was the last thing on my mind at the time, but you have a good point about it being used as a 1/4 real. Report this Post to the Staff
