So here it goes. I picked this up for nothing and it has proven to be a bit of a mystery.

It's Mexican, Early Republic, and dime sized.

The denomination and date are missing, but the shape of the eagle's wing should help ID which series this comes from...except I can NOT find a match! All the wings seem to point inward and down while this one points outward and maybe a bit upward.

Ideas?

Note your assayer "PJ" is present and accounted for...

This mint's distinctive styling (different on the minors than the 8R) was discussed in a thread on here recently.

My guess is that it is a Mexico 1/2 real 1834-42 Guanajuato mint (assayer PJ) that somebody cut in half.

In this shape it should weigh about 0.7 gm, the diameter, or wide part, should be about 16 mm.

Nicely done Westwood Arms, good eye!

Based on your guess, I was able to find a nice description of the 1/2 real and a terrific photo that confirms you assesment.

Now, what to do with it...humm

If the bi-sect is contemporary and it circulated as 1/4 real, it has a very high cool factor. If you're near Mexico City ask Duane Douglas what he thinks.

Don't pierce it for jewelry or sell it for melt.

The coin is broken, not cut. How that was achieved, well, your guess is as good as mine. It DOES look to be a VERY old break. As a matter of fact, I understand that it is a metal detector find that I picked up not far from Guanajuato itself.

I just saw Duane the other day...this piece was the last thing on my mind at the time, but you have a good point about it being used as a 1/4 real.
