Quite a find here. I'm not sure to be jealous of the guy for having dug an XF 1916-D, or cry from the major hairlines caused by having wiped a freshly dug coin.

Well, they find lots of silver dimes while metal detecting and are probably used to just wiping off the dirt with their thumb.

Pretty amazing! I know a guy in the LA area who has them all from metal detecting except the 16 D. While it is sad to see the hairlines, as a metal detectorist myself I completely understand how it would have happened. You find lots of coins on any outing. Many come up completely encased in dirt. Unless you get the bulk of the dirt off you won't know what you might have. It might have been a clad dime or a copper penny, and even if it was a silver dime the odds of it being valuable were tiny. As soon as you figure out it is a silver coin you should stop removing dirt until you get home, but sometimes the damage is done just getting to the point where you can tell you found silver.

By the way, I'd say he did well simply because he didn't ding the coin with his digging tool. Even when we try our best sometimes the digger smacks right into the coin leaving an ugly scar.

I haven't tried MDing myself, but it would be nice to have moments like this.

Metal detecting for coins really depends on the areas where you live and/or can get to. For many people in large cities, the only places are public parks and most of them have been gone over excessively. One of my neighbors uses one around the parks and miscellaneous other places and so far over many years his best finds are nails, screws, bolts and washers. Others in more unconcreted areas do much better.

Wow, I see stuff like this and love the treasure hunting aspect of detecting, but I don't think the area I live in would be very good for finds. I would think older areas that were settled long ago and haven't been overdeveloped in recent years, a good example would be many cities in the North East US, closer to where the original 13 colonies were settled.
