One thing that has impressed me are the details on certain Russian coins.

For instance with this 1898 5 rouble even in far from optimal condition the finest details especially with the horse and its rider can only be seen with magnification beyond even what this photo offers.

It is a lot to pack into a space about the diameter of a U.S. dime!

Clearly the designers of these coins has a lot of pride and satisfaction in their work.

I suspect that Faberge may have some contribution to the degign, but you are right, there is much detail in the small size. That has to be minting skill.

Yes, Faberge - it does have that feel of imperial elegance but in a masculine expression (I should check up on it though...).

The gold 1899 10 rouble below doesn't seem to have any greater detail of features even though it is double the space.

To add to that feat, every and I mean each and every Russian gold coin back in the Imperial era was individually weighed and had to meet a certain tolerance level otherwise it gets rejected. Pretty intensive work!

pretty neat work! I saw some german coins which have nearly similar picture, wonder what's the relation!
