I've never used them. I just wanted to hear some thoughts on whether or not capital holders are safer than albums. Safety in terms of preserving the coins of coarse.

Just so this doesn't turn into a discussion of which album is best, lets just assume we're comparing either intercept shield or dansco w/slipcase albums to capital holders.

So which is better or are they about equal?

The Capital Plastics holders are nice display pieces after the set's been completed, but all those screws make them inconvenient to the Nth power if adding and subtracting coins to/from the set. I don't think they necessarily afford any more protection than the Dansco slide type album, though the slides in those can scratch coins.

Chancellor Sutler is correct, the screws are a pain to remove and reassemble onto to the holder if you are constantly adding and removing coins. You would best wait until your set was complete. BU and high grade circulated sets look great in Capital Plastic, less so for small G-VG coins, IMO. Those are better suited to a Dansco or Whitman album

The other thing you have to remember about the holders is the difference between the 'pre-1980 issued holders and the current BVD (Bank Vault Drawer) line. The BVD boards changed the configurations of the coin openings on the 8x14" board making them less aesthetically pleasing than on the older 10x12" or 12x12" sizes that were formerly used. As far as preserving the coins go, the plastic holder when screwed down properly has a slightly tighter seal than a comparable Danso or Whitman album. The holder is impressive for displaying complete sets of coins, especially brilliant coins with cartwheel luster. If you are primarily interested in preserving coins, best stick with Air-Tite holders with the volara seal or its equivalent.

I think they make a very nice display, they protect the coins very well, they are not as air/water tight as slabs but probably as good as the albums, or at least as airtight. The plastic is much less reactive to the coins than the cardboard the albums are made from, even considering they have probably taken steps to make the cardboard as unreactive as possible. Overall I would say they as good a job if not a little better than the albums, but they are considerably more expensive. The problem is that screw problem. What many people who want the Capital Plastics holders do is to keep their coins in an album until it is finished and then transfer the whole set to a CP holder.

Basically all Albums and similar coin holders are equal for coin preservation. Naturally some are preferred due to appearances for displays. However, since most people don't or shouldn't display items that are on the top of the criminals stolen list, shuld not make a difference.
The main thing for all coin holders is the location. In a high humidity area, high air flow location, almost any coin holder is just not for long term storage.

I agree, the CP holders are best used to hold a completed collection. I do not like doing upgrades in my albums, but if I did, it would be nowhere near as annoying as upgrading a CP holder.

The best advice, in my opinion, and I say it all the time. Where you store your coins is very important, regardless of the storage medium chosen. Coins need stable temperature and low humidity.

As I have noted in other threads I have been using Capital holders since the 1960's. I belive they are unsurpassed in preserving the coins quality. As primarly a copper collector I am very sensitive to any method of storage that affects the color of my copper coins.

Over the years I have found that opening the most current panel to update my Lincolns once a year is not the onerous task some think it is. I'm getting ready to open a Canadian small cent holder today to add some new acquisitions. It may take all of 5 minutes.
