Hi,as usually today I went for ancient markets and and as usually I fell into temptation and bought these two coins.
first one:

Milne 4229 Claudius II Potin Tetradrachm of Alexandria. Year 2 = 269 AD. AVT K KLA-VDIOC CEB, laureate cuirassed bust right / L-B, eagle standing right, head left, with wreath in its beak.

second:
RIC 52
Sear'88 #3244
Sear 11438 Quintillus AE Antoninianus. Milan mint. IMP QVINTILLVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / FIDES MILIT, Fides standing facing, head left, holding standard in each hand; S. RIC 52, Cohen 25; Sear 11438.

to be honest my eye fell on the first, then to equalize spending I take also quintillus....I think it isn't so easy find on the market this unfortunate emperor isn't it?.
pics are taken under artificial light so they aren't so good I can't give you weights because my scale's batteries have died.
NEW PICS ADDED BELOW.

You know, I see Claudius II coins for sale almost daily, but rarely do I see Quintillus coins for sale, especially at an affordable price. My lone Quintillus has a hole in the middle. The hole does not look like it was drilled, but more like a nail was driven through it. I like to imagine that someone nailed it to a door frame either for superstition or as a message to someone.

Anyway, your Claudius II Potin is nice. The busts on Potins all seem to have the same appearance no matter who the Emperor might be.

I think you are lucky to find the pair of brothers together and they are both nice coins. I'd like to see better images when you have the chance.

Regards,

JW

Thanks even to jwharper,in fact on the obverse of the tetradrachm the figure isn't similar to claudius II as we can see for example on antoninianii.
About quintillus,I know he was his brother, and was a very unfortunate emperor as you can see below:
"The few records of Quintillus' reign are contradictory. They disagree on the length of his reign, variously reported to have lasted as few as 17 days and as many as 177 days (about six months). Records also disagree on the cause of his death. Historia Augusta reports him murdered by his own soldiers in reaction to his strict military discipline. Jerome reports him killed, presumably in conflict with Aurelian. John of Antioch and Joannes Zonaras reported Quintillus to have committed suicide by opening his veins and bleeding himself to death. John reports the suicide to have been assisted by a physician. Claudius Salmasius pointed that Dexippus recorded the death without stating causes. All records however agree in placing the death at Aquileia."
It's a sad end however it went, pratically a man became emperor by mistake.
I've seen your quintillus jw,and I agree with the hypotheses of the nail.
I'll put better pics as soon as possible with the daylight that's always better....however I had no payd much for these two coins.

as I promise new pics, maybe better...the quintillus antoninianus seems as covered with a transparent paint,or maybe coloured to recreate silver and green patina...usually I don't like much coins this way treated but in this case I took it too because quintillus is not easily available.
What do you think?
thanks.

Other ten the bright green on the reverse, the coloring looks natural to me. I'm not sure about the green. It may be bronze disease, but it doesn't look it to me. Are you able to remove the green easily?

I can say that if you look at the coin at an angle toward a light it looks all smooth and flattened.
Green areas aren't raised as usually we can see on coins with this kind of disease.
There's nothing to scratching, and it seems like green paint on with brush.
I wonder why, at this point ,put the green if the silver was good.
Probably also the silver color is fake and the coin full colored, first silver then green to recreate foulings.
Someone has been satisfied to recreate everything, but I think it was better if IT remained in it's original state, at least I hope it is genuine.

I can see no reason to question this coins authenticity. I cannot tell if it has been tooled/repatinated or anything else that would raise questions. I wouold be glad to have this coin if you want to give it away

I was only joking about you giving me your coin. Keep it. I would. By the way, call me JW. I've been called this my whole life. JW Harper was my grandfather.
