I need your help again! Found this in a quarter roll, and figured it deserved a second look. 2000 D Massachusetts Quarter that appears to have sat in an acid bath. Is there another explanation for this though? Both sides are copper colored, as well as the rim. It appears as though there's still some silver color in spots... so I doubt it's a clad issue.

The reason I posted it is because there's really good detail on this coin, as well as what appear to be die cracks running above and to the right of Washington's profile. Wouldn't these disappear in a bath?

Since the rim is intact and the devices are still sharp IMO I don't think it was an acid bath. Did you weigh the coin?

Well, I don't think it's stained, because there are a couple signs of corrosion, which look a lot like copper to me. I don't have a scale good for a weight. I saw online that if it's missing a clad then it's lighter. Any other ways to tell? Strangee coin.

Looks like it was exposed to the elements for some time. I've picked up clad coins that have sat in the dirt for a while that are colored like this. The metal reacts with chemicals in the dirt that causes the toning.

There are a few State Quarters that were subjected to a special anti-tarnishing rinse at the mint. I am not an expert but your coin seems to look a bit similar to those. Someone with more experience than I would know though.

Unless they look dark like a copper cent, they are altered.

Well now I'm confused. Good image as always coop, but that bottom image reminds me of my coin, save for the partial split. The detail is still there but it looks like copper to me.
