There is an auction up right now, with one 5 oz grand canyon quarter. But I am confused because it looks absolutely proof-- not proof-like, but full on deep cameo proof. And it has a D mintmark.

Could this be?

I havent followed the 5 oz'ers but a google search says there's no "proof" version as such, but a lot of proof-likes..so ok maybe it's just proof-like.... but most intriguingly google says that the numismatic versions are all P's and this one is clearly a D.

I hesitate to post the link because it is significantly mis-described and I think I might be able to pick it up inexpensively... but I am confused. I am thinking it's either a copy or a real rarity... or my google skills are not up to par.

I'm betting the latter, but anyone in the know care to chime in?

thanks

Secret Agent Man, with a name like that this should be an easy question. lol
JK! I haven't herd of any D MM 5oz ATB Pucks. The collector version was minted in Philly. The bullion has no mint mark. Its probably a copy coin or something of that nature. Or they could have purposely confused everyone with the listing because they are just relating a quarter to the 5oz coin. Really your buying a quarter not a 5oz coin. Id stay away from it. What else has this seller sold. It could also be a Chinese Knock Off, they are know for making non existent coin fakes. Good luck

That's what I thought too, and it's gone over what I "really" want to spend on it. I'm all for a gamble at times, but something tells me this is a sucker bet.

Anyway, since I am not going to go any further, here's the listing: http://www.shopgoodwill.com/viewIte...emID=8946585

Fairly crappy photos, but with it being posted next to the medal for size reference there's no question this is the same coin (not a regular quarter) and no question it has a D mintmark.

It's got to either be a counterfeit or a rarity.

The one thing I ask is that if this is bought by a CCF member that they share what it turns out to be. Unless it's a super-rare million-dollar piece, in which case I'd ask you to please shut your yap.

From the description:

The lot includes 3, 1 ½" coins which are a 1976 coin, a White House coin, an oversized quarter with the Grand Canyon on the back.

..it's 1 1/2 inches which is WAY to small to be a Puck. Those ATB's are 3 inches in diameter. It is pictured next to the 1 1/2 inch medal and is the same size....

Also doesn't even say it's silver

oh, right, I didn't even see that! Duh. Got sooo sidetracked trying to figure it out that I missed that piece entirely.

That of course begs the question "what is it?"

Secret agent man, it's a private mint issue, probably 2oz of silver or plated sliver in order to get around the hobby protection act. The obverse is fairly convincing, but the lettering and spacing looks "off" in some way. The dead giveaway as a knockoff product is the legends on the reverse, not only is the font wrong, the lettering appears raised, when on all ATB coins the lettering is incuse along the reverse rim of the coin. The "2010" is so far off as to be totally laughable. Good for you for asking on CCF. GW is a worthy charity, IMO, but coins would probably be the last thing I'd buy from them, bargain or not.
