Geepers ... this sub-forum has surely quited down since that exhaustive thread on Top-10 commemorative.

Attended the Baltimore Whitman show this past weekend where I picked up a lovely Maryland half upgrade for my 50-coin silver type set ... brilliant white with amazing cartwheel luster ... amazing eye appeal in hand. Graded as PCGS MS66/CAC approved.

Net distribution of 25,015 coins. The Maryland half is unusual for having a 'rippled' surface texture ... my photos do not capture this well ... but in hand the surfaces are wavy to the eye and truly enhance the play of light on the luster.

Fun fact is the translation from Italian of the legend shown on the reverse associated with the current Maryland State Seal ... again my poor photos do not capture the detail on this coin ... but the Italian reads FATTI MASCHII PAROLE FEMINE

English translation is "deeds are manly, words womanly".

How do you suppose that State Seal authorizing bill would play out today in the Maryland statehouse?

Anyways ... this is a lovely upgrade for my set ... still have one MS hole to fill.

Another WOW coin and it is an upgrade. Did you get it at the show you went to?

<drum roll> and the one to replace is? I'm thinking Captain Cook? I'll send you my address as the Holidays are just around the corner!
That's a great coin BTW. In hand, it also seems to have a more shallow strike that many of the other commems. PG

Thanks to the 'regulars' muddler and PG for their replies ... truly ... the lack of interest in this fabulous set is somewhat discouraging given the history and coin art available.

I suppose it's the price thing ... these are not inexpensive coins.

Anyways ... to clarify ... I purchased this Maryland half at the Baltimore Whitman show last weekend as an upgrade to an existing Maryland half that no longer met my eye appeal standards. The 'new' Maryland cost me $520.

Wish I knew at the beginning of my set quest what I know now ... my standards have evolved as I have matured ... and my expectations for the set have finally come into mature focus ... hence this upgrade.

Great news is that my classic silver commemorative set slowly plods along to a goal that will eventually be visually wonderful ... if I ever finish.

The ripling effect, as seen on the obverse seems to result from the ghosting of the details on the reverse, probably best seen at this grade or better.

After all, the Half is a relatively thin coin in its thinnest parts.
