Hello, I just found this in a roll of halves. Do you think it's an error coin, or post mint damage? There is almost no raised edge on the obverse.

I'm no expert but it might be a partial collar.

Thanks for the warm welcome! I've searched the forum and google, but can't seem to find a similar coin. Since I didn't find any silver in my searching today, it would be nice to find something unique.

Hard to tell from the pictures but could be a "magician" coin. First of all is the reverse and obverse in normal position (rotated die)? Is there a fine line following around the edge of the obverse or reverse rim? Does the coin sound bad when (its ring), when dropped?

The front and back are aligned properly, and it seems to sound the same as other coins when rung. I didn't see any lines around the rim. Here is a closer picture:

zimmy I didn't even think about a Magician's coin and I have one. LOL

If it is a Magician's coin you will need a 'tool' to separate the two sides. The tool that you need is a little cylinder that fits onto over the coin. It has a little edge that catches one side. You put the coin in the cylider and slap it down on something hard (it will leave a mark on wood) and the obverse and reverse separate.

But it could be an error coin --- I really can't tell from the pics. And your pics are very good.

Can you take it to a coin shop and let an expert see it in person? That would probably be the best way to find out.

It's a genuine error. It's possible that the strike was a tad weak so that coin metal did not rise into the rim gutter of the obverse die. Another possibility is that the planchet was slightly harder than normal, which would account for the absence of the design rim and the peculiar stepped shoulder. The latter is a bit unusual, but I've seen this effect before.

Thanks for the info, I really appreciate the replies. Now I just need to decide whether to keep it or try to get a couple dollars for it on ebay. Mike, do you think its worth anything over face value?
