I saw this coin for sale, but the seller did not show an image or describe the reverse. I must be going nuts, but I bought it anyway without knowing anything more than the image you see below. I believe this to be a Tetricus II. The bust is one of the best I have seen in a Tetricus II coin that I can afford. As usual, I got a very good price. Any opinions either about the coin or about my impulsiveness?

That is a nice portrait...do you suppose it's minted in Trier? I looked at a few Tetricus II Antoninianus from Trier, and it has that look, for lack of a better word.

That looks like a decent coin. I am curious about what the reverse looks like as I'm sure you are. I usually avoid coins modern or otherwise that don't have a photo of the reverse. But I could have asked the seller about it. Perhaps you could as well.

I agree with all that was said and avoided the coin due to the lack of reverse photo. It will be interesting to see if the reverse is as nice as the portrait making you the lucky one.

I always stay away from coins that do not show or describe the entire coin. Well, almost always. But for a paltry sum of money, I was willing to take a chance on this particular coin. It's kinda like buying a lottery ticket. I could scratch it off and get nothing; get my money back ; or win big.

The portrait is very nice indeed. So many of the coins of Tetricus and Tetricus II are struck from worn reverse dies. I look forward to seeing both sides of what you receive. Martin

I've come across coins with full detail obverses only to turn the coin over to the reverse being a mess. I hope this is not the case on your coin. Tetricus II coins are not easy to find.

Quote: Tetricus II coins are not easy to find. I've found several and own three, now four. I know what you mean when you say good obverse with a bad reverse. I hope that's not the case here, but I'm taking the gamble. I'm also hoping for a different reverse from the three I already own. To be honest, I'm hoping for the priestly implements as on RIC 255, 258, and 259. I have a message into the seller asking for more information. I guess we'll just have to wait to see.

I was amazed at the high price of good Tetricus II coins recently, even the bad ones were a lot more than I expected. Its always nice to take a bit of a gamble every now and then, adds to the excitement!
I'd put money on the reverse being Spes - dont forget to let us know!

Quote: I'd put money on the reverse being Spes - dont forget to let us know! You are most likely correct. The three I own are Spes reverses. The images are posted on another thread from about a month or so ago. But, alas, hope springs eternal.

Quote: Any opinions either about the coin or about my impulsiveness? Impulsiveness wise I'm the same as you, poor descriptions, mis-attributions, distant pictures, all these catch my attention. I even bid on auctions were the seller has not, or has failed when adding pictures, as said above its all part of the fun of bargain hunting. I've just bought an 'unidentified Roman coin' sold with grainy small pictures for £1.43 inc postage! I can see enough to ID it to Carausius, I can also see enough to tell its as good as some of the £30-40 ones on 'Buy it Now' on ebay. Looking forward to getting it in hand!

Quote: I'd put money on the reverse being Spes And you win! I received the coin today and the obverse is as good or better than the image the seller used. However, the reverse is very poor. Perhaps the poorest of all my Tetricus II coins. It is different though. My other three are all RIC 270, SPES AVGG. This one is RIC 272, SPES PVBLICA. I took a gamble and, although I didn't win, I think I broke even on this one. It's not the reverse I was hoping for, but it is definitely a very nice obverse.

That's too bad JW, was hope that the reverse was just as nice as the obverse. But as long as you are happy with the coin you didn't loose out.

So here are the images of this coin. As I said, great obverse, lousy reverse. But for the price, not bad at all.

That's a very distinctive Roman, especially the obverse! Is there any explanation for the ragged flan?
