I thought I would show you the newest coin in my ancients collection. As you can see in the pictures, it is not entirely cleaned. I think I can easily finish the job but if not I can still fully attribute the coin. What do you guys think? How did I do on this one?

You done good. I looked at a similar coin a while back, but with dark green patina. I bid, but it got too expensive. I love the coiled serpent reverse. The price is much better than the one I was looking at. I think it went for around $50 or $60. It may have been in slightly better shape, but not by very much at all. Nice coin for your collection.

If it can be cleaned and not be ugly under the crud, it will be a good deal. As is or if there is pitting below, I don't see $30. As is the coin is fully identifiable. The city name starts at the top of the reverse with the part before it being the name of the magistrate/governor responsible for the issue. If you need help, look at the seller's other offerings which he did identify. I'm not sure why he didn't name the city on this one.

Nice coin, hopefully you will be able to remove the dirt.

Thanks guys! I hope I can get rid of it, too. If not, I still like it a lot. I am ok with paying what I did for it...I think the reverse is mesmerizing haha. I have no other coin with a serpent on it.

That is a nice coin. I'm curious though, how would you get rid of that crud on the coin? I know that certain chemicals remove certain kinds of dirt. I've only tried cleaning on modern low value coins.

Hi,

Here's a page you might find interesting.

My-Newest-Coin:-Macrinus

To truly identify one of these coins you need to identify the die combination. In this instance it is MAR5.47a. That particular die combination is not in any other reference.

nice find

Wow! That is a fantastic reference! Thank you so much for finding and sharing that with me. I doubt I would have found that myself. I really appreciate it!

Where did you find this reference page? I am curious...I have another Macrinus double-bust coin not fully attributed and I wonder if this has it listed, too.

Hi,

Actually I wrote it.

There's a link to it on my Diadumenian pages (which sorely need updating)

My-Newest-Coin:-Macrinus

but unless you are specialising in Roman Provincial coins with a portrait of Diadumenian it's probably not worth buying :) It seems expensive but I only get £5 per book - the rest is all publishing costs. I really did it for the "fun" of it.

Post your other one and I'll look it up for you.

Malcolm, hoiw do I find your book? I looked on Amazon with no luck, both using your name and the book's title. It looks like a reference I would like to have in my library. Thanks

Hi,

It's published with Lulu. There should be a link straight to it on my webpage - right under the text in red letters.

As it's a print on demand it can take a few weeks to print and ship.

It's the most comprenhensive book on bronze Roman Provincial coins available. I have included examples that just aren't mentioned in other texts and have got assistance from the Paris Museum and the British Museum as well as numerous dealers and companies.

The big criticism with it (and it is a big one) is that it should cover those coins issued by Macrinus as well - it doesn't - but only because it developed as a record of my own collection - and then I thought - well just by adding a few more I could cover all the coins issued with Diadumenian's portrait - sort of a "to get" list.

And it really devepoled from there .. I would have included Macrinus coins if I had been collecting them - but I just couldn't afford them all - so I specialised

Thanks for your interest

Bacchus,

The other coin was posted a while back when I first received it. The pictures are not good, but I think they may be able to show enough detail to identify it. If you need me to write out the lettering on it I will gladly do so.

BTW, That site is absolutely incredible! You did a fantastic job on everything. I really want to thank you for your hard work and huge contribution to the documentation of history and our hobby. I am in awe!

An interesting coin and a great reference site Bacchus2, thanks.

Sites, and books like this are invaluable - It makes me wonder if I know enough in any specialised areas that would be worth publishing, prob not yet but hopefully in the future!

Hi,

I hope the site is of some use - but it really does need an overhaul.

I've had a look at your second coin and the reverse is certainly the MAR5.42e. The obverse might be the same as that coin, but I'm not 100% convinced, both coins are not in the best state of preservation.

It's the best reference I think you will have though.
