so I've never seen another nickel with the swirl looking thing by where a ear would be on Jefferson.any ideas on what it might be? any help at all would be awesome is it just something that happened threw its life span? thanks

I have dozens of these in all different denominations. It's PMD. Not sure from what. Could be a coin roll wrapper.

It's one of several types of damage that can be caused by coin rolling machines.
