So I just picked up one of my first proof sets on ebay, a 1968. Can a proof set be opened and re"sealed"? The half just has an odd browning tarnish to me. The best way I can describe it would be the brownish residue on a piece of scotch tape after you stuck it to a paper bag, and then pulled it off. In the 1st pic those are not dings its dots of brownish tarnish, and the scratches are on the mint case. Is it just that it's 40 some years old? I've never purchased a proof or UNC set this old so any insight would be helpful.

The penny also appeared odd to me too. The diagonal lines. Again tarnish? I don't think the seller was pulling anything as I bought 2 other sets, 1987 & 1994, both of which were very nice.

I'm not sure about the Kennedy, but I think the lines you see on that 68 Lincoln Cent are from die polish, We'll see what other members have to say. Congrats on the sets.

The coins look fine to me. And yes the wood grain looking pennies are nicknamed Woodies.

Rewster, I ran into the same thing with a 1971 silver IKe. It appeared to never have been opened but when I took it out to put in my Dansco it looked like a brown fingerprint with glue on it. It looked bad so I tried to get it off but without harming the coin I just can't. Going to have to throw it in the bullon pile and get another one for my set.

There is definitely variability in the quality of older proof sets.
I doubt it was previously opened.

Yes, but it is not necessarily what caused what you are seeing. The sets are not completely air tight and a lot could have happened in 43 years. If this set was stored in a volatile environment, the plastic case would have not protected it.

Be happy. Some dealers are asking much more for that woodgrain effect now. Error coin collecting of almost any type is growing.

Thanks for the feedback guys, and good point Carl. Now that I know it wasn't cleaned, and it's due to the die that was used, I think it is pretty cool. Amazing how something like that can change your perspective.

I think I'll just wait and see on the half. Sometimes time changes your perspective on a particular coin (at least for me). If down the road, I've not come around to the half I'll pick up a different one. Thanks again all.

Side Bar as I have just past 100 posts... I really appreciate the feedback I've gotten on this forum in regard to various coin questions. I have found a lot of useful information and it is nice to get some knowledgeable feedback from other collectors, as well as share my collecting experiences with others.

So thanks to everyone for making this site so useful and helpful!
