Any idea what this is and specifically look at the C in America it looks as though there is a black C tilted to the north east and running into the rim as well as a piece directly above the C?

Split plating. The copperplating is pierced and the zinc starts raising. Very common on Zincolns'.

Probably just a struck theough error because of the lack of contact on the reverse. Sometimes people use a punch on coins to leave a similar mark, but they show up on the reverse of the coin:
