I have a small bucket of foreign coins that I have picked up over the years. I have finally decided to store them all in 2x2's for better protection and so my children can view them.

I can probably identify the country for around 75% of the coins, but the others I am not really sure where to begin to look. I know I could post photos here for more input, but does anyone make a book that has pictures of foreign coins?

I am not looking for a book that goes in to great detail with mintage and varieties. I would like a book that picks a country, shows pictures of the denominations for their modern coins, and then moves on to a different country. It would also need to have coins from Europe before the Euro took over as a lot of my coins came from there when I traveled in the late 1980's.

Can anyone give me some ideas for this quest?
Rest in Peace

I recently found an "atlas" of world coins, but it's 99% text about the history of coins and 1% photos of a sample from each country.

Your best bet is the Yeoman "A Catalog of Modern World Coins", 1850-1964. You can find the latest edition at almost any bookstore, or with some luck you might be able to find a used edition at a thrift store or used book store.

Otherwise, the Internet is free, and others here can suggest sites that they might use.

here is a site I used when I got 2 pounds of foreign coins. I could figure out all but the oriental ones.

if you have an idea of the country, choose that country, then you can either look-up the denomination for an image, or you can see images and find the denomination

I would recommend the Krause world coin catalogue, the volume covering 1900-2000. Not only does it have pics of most coin types but it has a set of handy "instant identifier" pages in the front to help you identify non-western-alphabet coins.

If you only want the "instant identifier", WCG has an ID assistance pages you could try.

Thanks guys. I will start looking around for a copy of the book Sap mentioned and also use the website listed as an additional tool.
