I have just been photographing this Cistophoric tetradrachm of Hadrian. It is the first Cistophoric I have handled.

Obv:- HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS P P, Bare-headed, draped bust right
Rev:- COS III, Minerva, helmeted, standing l., holding patera and spear; at her side, shield.
References:- Cohen 294. BMC 1071. RIC 503. Metcalf 395.
Minted in uncertain mint in Asia circa A.D. 138

It appears to be overstruck on a Mark Antony and Octavia AR Cistophorus. The remains of the legend M • ANTONIVS • IMP • COS • DESIG • ITER • ET TERT can be seen on the reverse with the M starting at 9 o'clock.

Martin

That's a nice coin. I didn't know what a cistophorus was so I looked it up. Apparently it's a coin of Pergamum. Circulated and minted up to the time of Hadrian.

Very nice coin. The image of the older coin is clear on the reverse. This was a fairly common pratice to over strike on earlier coins.

Very interesting coin, especially with the overstrike. That's a very good reverse strike. Minerva has much more detail than I usually see. I only own one Ionia Silver Cistophoric Tetradrachm, and its like the one this coin has overstruck.

Cistophoric Tetradrachms were the trade coin of their day with consistent weight and silver. The name came from the original type which bore (-phoric) a basket (cista) opening with a snake. By the time of Hadrian the types no longer were cistaphotic but the term remained on the large, flat tetradrachms. There are hundreds of variations if you want to specialize in them. This one is not high grade but shows the idea and has the monogram for Pergamon at reverse left. Unlike most big Greek silver, these low relief can stack.
