I hear different things from different people about payments OTHER than Paypal for ebay sales...some say it's a bunch of bull you cannot take personal checks and money-orders, and, somehow write it in their listing how to get around forced paypal payments....I don't want my listings flagged for removal(I believe the word "check" or "money order" is an instant removal, but not sure)...if anyone knows: 1---is it "legal" via ebay rules to use checks and MO's as payment...I'm NOT interested in the other credit card payment options, as I have read they force you to wait a long time for shipping items to arrive, and, sending payments into a checking account...NOT goin there...paypal fees get REALLY TIRESOME, but, it's part of doing business, so, I usually just suck it up, and be grateful for a sale these days. 2--if not, how do you get around it, without causing a flag? I had also heard paypal was now the only accepted payment method; seems it would be pretty difficult to get around, as 'pay now' page won't let you go any other way - you would always show as payment due?

You MUST accept PayPal as a payment method on ebay. However, if a buyer wants to pay by check or money order there is nothing to stop them from doing so. I am not 100% certain but I do believe you can mention alternative payment methods in your auction as long as PayPal is the primary method. Of course, if something goes wrong with an auction paid with a check or money order, your seller protection goes out the window so be cautious as to who you allow to remit alternative payments. |

ebay stopped allowing check/mo for most categories. There are options besides paypal that are allowed but they all charge similar fees.

You can take any method you like. but you can not specifically say any method other than paypal. You can insinuate or leave it open to the buyer that other options will be acceptable, and then work out the details after the sale.

I remember the "old" days selling...about 1/2 of my sales were by personal check and money-orders...if the check was under 20 bucks, I would mail next day, and not bother to wait for check to clear...I think in 600+ sales, there was 1 bad check for a small amount, pretty amazing, considering....

I'm with ya Ikes, I think most sellers miss the old days. When if you sent out a $2 item without Delivery Confirmation there were no problems. Now if you send without DC, it's almost a guarantee you will get a Paypal dispute. Is it me or do all these new rules breed people to want to take advantage of the situation? On topic - I understand why ebay says you can only accept paypal. But if the buyer wants to pass on ebay protection and pay by check or money order, that should be their choice. Another company needs to hurry up and create a competitve auction site. |

Oh, boy. I was one of the first 300 or so people to sign up for ebay, and for years I had a great time buying and selling, NEVER by PayPal. I don't even have a PayPal account. Of course when ebay forced sellers to insist on PayPal compensation I left ebay for good, except for one or two transactions by good folks on this forum who accepted my MO. There are other sites - but they've never caught on like ebay has. (I even remember the "good old days" when AOL hosted a similar site before ebay came along.) Yep - ebay is no longer the garage sale site of cyberspace. No bargains there any more. |
