I have seen this variety discussed in this forum before and seen it for sale on ebay.

Is this just from wear?

Is this a variety?

If it is a variety, what would cause missing or partial chrome plating?

Any ideas?

This is a variety +/or major mint error.

The Mint forgot to plate them.

Probably, quality control was less than spectacular and they were released, or they were back-door jobs.

Having gone through the exercise of selling one on ebay recently, I can tell you that the demand for a non mint state coin is pretty modest--a few dollars (under 10) depending on the grade.

Thanks for the info guys.
Now that I understand what it is and where its from, is there an easy way to distinguish the non or partial chrome plating from the standard 1944 nickle?

Just bumping this old thread.
I have 1944 and 1945 nickles that I believe are missing chrome.
What is the best way to tell?
Do I look for a blue tinge or shine?
thanks

No, blue tinge or shine indicates chrome.
Missing chrome will look more like a nickel nickel from 1942 or 1946.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Thanks for the info.
Looks like I have both a Chrome & Missing Chrome for both 1944 & 1945.
Great! :)
