Please bear with me as I'm venturing into uncharted waters. :P Besides a couple of Morgan's I've been concentrating on finishing up my collection of modern coins before I move on to some of the classic sets. I went to a local coin shop that I've never been to before on advice from a fellow CCF member. I was digging through a bin of 2x2's and came across this cent. Please forgive the pics. They aren't great as I had to do them in a hurry, the coin in hand is more chocolate than the pics lead to believe. Now, a couple of questions. The LWC/LMC "woodies" occur because of an improperly mixed alloy. Can the same be true with the IHC's? Is that what I'm seeing here? Also, around the letters it is a bit darker. Is this normal grunge/grime accumulation, or a sign of cleaning? If anyone would venture a guess as to the grade I'd appreciate it. I do love the coin though. Looks great (to me at least) and with the date 1889 it just might have entered Oklahoma Territory here during the great land run, you never know. The best part is I picked it up for 99 cents. I'll buy that for a dollar.

That is a very clean coin. Nice smooth surfaces and good coloring as well. If I were collecting indian heads I'd seek out coins that have a similar look to that of your coin. For 99cents you did great.

Nice one looks like an EF-40 with a bit of strike weakness on the diamonds

I'd say VF30-35. I've seen woodies with the IHC's, I believe yours is an example. Nice coin

That is a very nice looking coin, I would go VF35 on it and buy those all day at $1.

Thanks, all. I'm learning (slowly). The downside is this one really makes me want to start IHC's as my next set. I guess it never ends.

Quote:this one really makes me want to start IHC's as my next set. My current project, and one you will really enjoy working on! Nice 1889. I agree normal amount of grime, no worries. I put it at VF35. The biggies are the 1877 and 1909-S, with several semi-keys in the series. 1866-1872 will set you back some $, as will the 1908-S. I'm doing a VG-VF set to keep it somewhere in the realm of affordability.
