I know the answer I am going to get here, but am asking anyway. In doing my weekly roll searching I ran up on a 1981D that has surfaces just like a proof except no cameo. I assumed at first someone did a polish job on it but here is where I started to question myself. The fields are mirror finish and dead flat, no polish marks and no dishing or rounding of edges. On top of that the mirror finish is perfect inbetween really small features such as the rays above the eagle and in between letters. That is nearly impossible to accomplish with a buffer. Were there ever and clad Denver or Philli minted coins accidentally struck on proof planchets?

without seeing it in person it's hard to tell. It is possible to have a prooflike finish from a circulation strike. I don't know how the mint handles planchets or if its possible for proof planchets to cross-pollinate between mints.

Pictures please. Could be just a really early die state and good strike? Are the planchets for proofs different than business strike? I thought they were just polished more and handled more carfuly....then again IDK.

Here are two images. The coin is a bit scuffed up so it isn't easy to take pics that show off the proof like finish. The more focused image you can see the reflection of my hand at six o'clock.

It doesn't look like a proof from that year to me. It was probably a heck of a nice strike that got circulated. I bet if you got this one hot off the presses it would have been a MS-69 example!

That is truly remarkable.

You can find highly PL coins in mint sets but this date is scarce and this one is more PL than typical. I don't have a very strong opinion and better pictures might not help but I lean toward your idea that a proof planchet was struck. I've seen this with other coins in circulation but generally they were earlier dates than 1981. It might be a polished PL but it would be crazy to ruin a nice coin.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Not a proof planchet, but definitely a PL example. A shame its that scratched up.
