Can anyone help with a tentative Id of this rather sad, heavily clipped, extremely worn coin?

Spain, struck in Mexico most likely, silver Cob 8 Reales or fraction thereof. What does it weigh?

Many thanks for that. It weighs 4g and the diameter is about 17mm. What would it's size have been before it got clipped?

It didn't get clipped - it's a "cob", originally made to look like that. In other words, the blank was clipped to that shape before the coin was struck. A quick and hasty process which often resulted in coins which are unidentifiable as to date and mintmark. A 1 real coin should weigh about 3.4 grams, a 2 reales would be double that, so your coin is most likely a 1 real.

The date's not quite present, partly off-flan at the bottom of your top pic. It would be late 1600s or early 1700s. something like this coin.
