My Gran gave this to me years ago. I never gave it much thought as I believed it just commemorated the 200th (or rather 199th) anniversary of the War of the Bavarian Succession in 1778... wrong Frederick II though!

I happened upon it earlier and was determined to find out what it actually commemorated and stumbled across this site, with an original example of a 1778 Hesse-Kassel Thaler;

http://www.kittredgecollection.org/...ead/d1e34922

The one I have is almost identical to the original, save for the date '1977' on the obverse below the bust of Frederick II and the No. '1000' (silver content I'm guessing) on the neck of his bust. The edge on mine is not reeded or impressed as I would imagine the originals were, apart for the coins number (1536).

This is not really my forte as I collect military medals and despite trawling the internet I have not managed to find another modern example to compare it with. Does anyone have any ideas, opinions, or even leads that I could follow up on this re-strike?

Thanks,

Jon

Sorry, cannot help you at all with the restrike. Could have been made by pretty much everybody ... But the original coin (the model, so to say) is quite interesting. The pieces are called "Sterntaler" in German ("star thaler") while in the US they are sometimes called "blood thalers". The former refers to the depicted order (see the link you posted, or here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_...esse-Kassel)), the latter refers to the fact that Hessian mercenaries fought on the English side in the US War of Independence.

Cheers for the reply and info Chrisild!

Think I'm going to have to keep an eye out for a period example, until then this one will have to fill the space beside my Napoleonic Hesse-Kassel medal

Depending on how much "disposable" money you have ;) one of these http://www.ma-shops.com/shops/searc...e=0&curr=EUR could be interesting. I just did a brief search for "Sterntaler" at the MA-Shops website. (Note that these are different dealers; MA-Shops is just a platform.) One of the four is a half taler but with a very similar design.
