Hi guys

Will some one take a look at this 1938 nickel and explain what the hunks of metal are in the date with the arrows pointing to them.

What could cause this...?
Is this pre or post damage...?
Or what...?

Excuse the bad quality of the pics, I manipulated then to get a better look...This coin is way better then the picture.
