Great story! I gave one of my daughters a large cent for show and tell. It really was a hit.

as far as my soon to be step daughters class room has a large display of coin money on the walls. Yes they are larger than life but there is a golden dollar and Kennedy half there as well. Not sure about the ike. I don't remember seeing one.

Here are a few place that I have come across that DO take the golden dollars.
1) Select parts of the smaller turnpikes around Pa with coin drop boxes ( also accepts halves)
2) Vending machines inside the UPS work hubs. ( used to work for them)
3) Some post offices have stamp vending machines that take the golden dollars( why not government mint and owned)
4) last but not least there is a gentleman at my church that hands young kids (under 8 years old) a golden dollar to put in as there offering!~

So your 6-year-old got to teach his teacher something. It doesn't get any better than that.
I agree.

I have no problem believing a teacher had no clue. Most of them have no clue about much of anything.

The registers at my store have a space that can be used for dollars or whatever coins. For that matter I have never seen a register with fewer than 5 slots.
I have not seen a whole lot of vending machines in the mid atlantic area that didnt take the new dollars. Maybe a few here and there.
No one is saying ditch the higher denomination bills. Just trash ones and be done with it. As much as I like the 2's, trash them as well and make a coin for that. People will whine as they always do. Ignore them and in a year no one will even remember ones.

I agree. The complaining will be short-lived once people adapt and realize that the burden was in their head.
