Hi, everyone.

I obtained a 1973 Lincoln Head Cent the other day in a job lot of UK coins (no idea how it got in there), and I was wondering how easy it would be to collect US coins in the UK?

Thanks in advance.

I've never seen a UK coin in circulation here in the U. S., so you're ahead of me. On the other hand, I've managed to build a decent collection of UK coins of all types clear back to the late 1700's by digging through "junk" boxes and trays of "melt" silver pieces in coin shops. Perhaps you'd be able to do the same?

Are you in England? I was there form 77 to 79. There were alot of US coins around, but of course I was at a USAF base. Thats probably how the LMC got into the lot of English coins

It's not easy.

State Quarters go for at least 50p but more than likely between 75p and £1. Now, quarters are worth about 18 cents at the moment, they used to be 12 cents, so less than a 20p coin, so you are going to have to pay at least twice the value, if not three, four or five times the value.
Other coins can be even more expensive, unless you find a coin bin in a coin shop with them in, but these people know their worth in the UK.

I collect anything, and most of my US coins have come from the US, I bought a few for far too much, and never, ever got anything for a decent price!

I think it will be difficult, but still doable. I have been collecting US coins for the past 5 years and I think I am doing well.
If you stay here long enough you will know more about US coins and once you reached 250 post you will be able to trade coins with other members.

There are UK coin collectors from US and other countries and you will sure have some Great Britain coins to trade. I myself collect pennies and half pennies and have some US duplicates and I would be happy to trade with you one day

So stick around, read what other members are posting (there are a lot of information here) ..... at least you will start to have an idea of what to you would be interested to collect from US.

I hope you enjoy your stay

Depends whether you plan on getting coins locally, in change, etc, or if you are willing to buy from ebaYUK or other mail order.

The way I get US coins is:

Trading and purchases from folks here on CCF.

For example, the current 2011 Olympic 50 pence coins are popular with folks back in the states. Just like the 2008 Royal Shield set was.
