I really only wanted this for the Little Rock and Jamestown commemoratives since I don't have them... I also have a Dansco hole to fill with the dime...

So, did I make a good investment in buying this set for the coins separately or should I keep it intact because that's where the value is?

Didn't do any research in this set before picking it up- I stupidly thought it would have more silver in it.

Yeah, sadly, other than the Silver Dollars, there are NO silver coins in the Legacy Sets. They only contain "Proof" coins sadly..... Don't know why they did that.
Only 2 Silver coins out of 14.....
I'd say you got a good deal on this Set though, because I got them when they first came out, and I believe the original issue price was $135.00 plus shipping/handling.
They've dropped considerably in value which saddens me greatly ! .....

I have both the 2007 & 2008 Legacy Sets, and I do like the presentation of the coins in this packaging..... more value intact though ?.....dunno, probably not, but it would be a shame to waste the O.G.P. that is so costly and expertly done here, IMO.

ha! I knew you'd answer this thread Eaglefoot! After I bought it, realized that I paid eighty dollars for a box, two commemorative coins, and a clad proof set... I did some digging into old CCF threads and read about your exchanges with that other member who told you to buy rare old coins and stop wasting your money, as well as some other threads about people saying they loved the packaging. It only makes sense now, that you'd way in first! :)

That being said, yes, I do believe the packaging (at least in photos) looks lovely. I'm trying to put together a nice set of African American themed coins (I don't know why I'm so into doing that, I'm not an African American person)- so when I saw this had the Desegregation proof I jumped at it. Of course, I thought that since it had two silver proofs that it would obviously be a silver proof set (and if it was a silver proof set I think it would have been very valuable- since then it would have been the premium mint product of that year).

Mostly, though, I bought it because I got beat out in the last ten seconds of an auction for a beautiful toned 1955 Quarter at MS-66. :(

Well.... I can never argue that "Ultra Modern" coins are a better buy than "Classic" coins !
But, as a huge supporter of "Modern" coins, I CAN argue that it's okay to collect BOTH ! ....
This side of the hobby just shouldn't be "condemned" IMO.

A primary reason for collecting coins should not be "how much it's worth" or "will it keep going up in value?".
Secondary reasons, yes, primary no, IMO.
Everybody would like to know that their purchases will be raising in value through the years....that doesn't always happen, and may "rarely" happen with Ultra Modern materials, but this doesn't mean you shouldn't find them beautiful, interesting, historically represented, collectible, and just hobby encompassing with a pleasure, and to still have these things with a certain level of pride and fulfillment.

So yeah, I'd say I'm definitely disappointed with it's current value, it's overall attention, the lack of it being a coveted item in Numismatics, the Mint handicapping the Legacy Sets by making all of the coins contained in it available individually, etc., etc., etc..
There was a low Mintage of "the Sets", but not the coins overall, and with nothing particularly "special" contained therein, other than the O.G.P., it was really doomed to failure.

But Gosh Darn it ! ...... I STILL LIKE THE SETS ! ....
