Can anyone assist with this Tunisian gold coin? Although it is the correct diameter (width) for a 40 Dinars commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the Republic, KM290, it only weighs 39.6 grams on my scales (which are accurate), whereas Krause and Mischler state that it should weigh 76 grams. Are there two issues of this coin? or lighter presentation pieces? Any assistance much appreciated.

I can only think of a jewellery copy, it's much too light to pass as a forgery.

Thanks for responding Alanbagerap. I think the piece is far too well made to be a jeweller's copy. I suspect it may be a pattern or trial piece of some kind. I believe the issued gold coins are in fact all individually numbered from 1 to 2031, beneath the date "1957" on the reverse, whereas on this piece below the date 1957 a small symbol is struck with the letters "BR" after it. To the right, the letters "NI" are struck below the date "1967" (I cannot make out from the KM catalogue what is struck below the 1967 date on the coin illustrated there. Obviously, this is one for the tunisian coin specialists.

Thanks again for your input.

Regards
Pete

While I know nothing about this particular coin, this is clearly the product of master die engraving and a modern coin press--not the work of a jeweler, however skilled they may be. The weight discrepancy is large, but the surfaces appear struck that way, and not plated afterwards.

Hello Pete, I assume those coins are minted in the Western World, maybe in France. I certainly remember the BR engraver's sign or mint mark from somewhere. It should be a trial piece, if it's not numbered. It's definitely a work of a mint I think.
