It is just a question of numbers, there aren't enough graded examples of McHenry to get a true sample of MS69s. Either many monster boxes have been sold of this design, or they are sitting at APs untouched or not yet cherry picked through. But yeah, $1750 for a $120 coin is unreal. The two raw examples I have are clean dmpls, which I suspect the majority of the run was, so the inflated pricing is unjustified.

Anyone else see a lot of upside to the Mt. Rushmore Bullion coins?

If this series gain more traction and get more collectors involve...... especially when spot hovering around $15-$18/oz to make each coin around $100.
May be it's just me, but I don't feel like Mt. Rushmore will pop like Hawaii Volcanoes.

Bizy...the 2 Ft. McHenry I have both have issues. I got the 1st one within a week of them going on sale and another a couple of weeks ago. I bought the 1st from Provident and then tried APMEX... I'd like a clean one, but have decided to stop spending money on them in search of a gem. I agree with the logic that the high dollars for the MS69 bullion is more about simple numbers than it is about the quality. It isn't like these are hard to come buy and get a high quality coin - it is about what has been graded, and that is why I think paying $1700 for 1 of these is beyond dumb. There are monster boxes still for sale unopened full of these coins - or even tubes of 10 - which would be a better buy for $1300 than a single graded MS69 coin. This isn't a rare coin and the quality is yet to be determined to be rare as well. |

Fox... I agree with the "rule changing"... I thought they had standards they were supposed to adhere to. If during the run they decide that they were being too lenient - how does that not invalidate the grading they do? I am becoming less and less enamored with the entire grading process - since it is a subjective process like the upcoming Olympics - and the gymnastics program.

@Doug58: sorry about your rotten luck with the bullion issues. I believe these are a challenge to collect as they were made for trading as investment grade coins. Their ample negative spaces and mirror like surfaces makes them so susceptible to scuffing and marring, and will be a challenge for future collectors to try to put together a set. Even though there will be twice as many as the vapor blasted issue, the great majority of them will become mishandled, discolored and otherwise scruffy. At $117 per, I'd keep buying and reselling until I got a clean coin with less issues. I'm not a fan of graded slabs for this set, as "DMPL" is essentially meaningless without the frosty, contrasting devices. Everything on the coin is dmpl which just looks flat under indirect lighting.

Bizy... I'm ok with the coins I got. The vapor coins I have gotten so far are all pretty much perfect, and most of the bullion are good.

I got an email from the Mint saying it will be free shipping for online orders for Black Friday sale for a week or so. Not anything I will use since I do not order on line.

Sure is! Not even worth all the advertising! We shall see soon if the gold prices decrease. Maybe silver will again but not to be able to buy these 5 oz coins I don't think

Really though with a down trend all year its probably as simple as the mint just isn't making as many or the wrong ones are ending up in their hands. For whats its worth I couldnt even find a DMPL 69 from NGC on ebay. I'm sure they exist but they werent listed. I dont really buy into the created rairty theories. I do believe over time they tighten up a bit when high values have been established, but they dont really gain much creating a fake rarity. Especially not on these. A proof ASE would make more sense with how many get sent in, not something they get less than 10k submissions from and thats probably being generous. Plus in all honesty the mints quality hasnt been living up to their own high standard weve been accustomed too. This was the first year I've ever returned anything from quality issues and it wasnt a one time thing either. |

I hate when one of these coins starts costing a fortune to get. I am one of those people that has many of the bullion coins graded 69dpml. Now this coin is out of reach for me in that grade ,(but I do have a raw one) same thing for Hawaii and Maine. I couldn't even get raw ones for a reasonable price.
