I found a large cent in GOOD condition, appears to be 1843 N-17. Price is $26.

Is this a good buy for resale as a variety or does it not really matter in this low grade?

Should I bite on this or not?

If it is a N-17 I'd buy it. If it is and you decide you don't want it send it my way. The 1840 to 1844 years are the only years in the late dates that I have any fascination for and especially 1843. If I could get my hands on the N-17 I'd probably go ahead and collect the varieties for that year and maybe the rest of the 1840 to 44 years.

It is listed as R6-, 'very rare' with an estimated 13-30 pieces. Looking at the pictures of it, though, this one would be hard to positively ID in G.

I didn't think the rarity was that high. I thought it was down to a low R5 now.

Coin is in the mail, will let you know what I find out. The coin appears to be in the F12 ballpark without damage. I'm feeling confident.

I am not good at grading old coppers, and I'm never sure what to do when I run across varieties. So much to learn here, I can't wait to finish my Indian set so I can put an old copper set together.

Here is the suspect, VG8 at best I would say.

No way this is the N-17, but I can't figure out what it is. Date position appears to be identical, but lacking obverse die markers. I've gone through photos of each variety for this year and I'm stumped...

whoops forgot the photos. These were dumbed down to about 20% of their original resolution, so I can upload much better pics if I need. I should also mention this is the mature head, large letter.

1843 N-5 Date position clearly has to be either 5 or 17. This shows the dull line to the right of the Y in LIBERTY and the 1 is closer to the bust than the denticals. N-17 doesn't have that line and the 1 is closer to the denticals than the bust.
