Ok, so I have had some health issues over the last five months or so and on Friday last I came in for a checkup which resulted in an unexpected admission to one of the larger Sydney hospitals (my second stay during this episode). Firstly, no need to worry or start thinking that my collection may be coming up as a deceased estate soon, unfortunately for all of you I will survive ;-)
So have been stuck in a hospital bed with nothing to do but read and trawl the Internet on my iPhone (really starting to take a toll on my poor eyes!) - astute observers may have notice my numbers of posts increasing at an alarming rate! This morning after I had traweled my way through every coin auction site and forum at least three times I was wondering what to do next to fill in the day... If only I could be noodling I thought. My trusty loupe was in my small back pack next to my bed (always keep it there so only had to tell the missus which back pack to use when she was bring a few essentials in from home with out arousing her suspicions by asking for the loupe :-)
Then it struck me... So I grabbed some $20 notes and my IV stand and headed down stairs. First stop, the canteen. One small soft drink only, paid with a twenty and asked for all the change in fifties - when I got I funny look I vaguely said something about raiding the snack machines in the middle of the night... And out thoses babies came... As I looked into the cash draw I saw three real shiny ones and held my breath and said a quick hello to the big fella upstairs, and YES they all made it into the change!
I was on a roll and too excited to even check my loot, straight to the snack bar, another $20 note and another shy reference to the snack machines, bingo! Strike two. The news agent was next followed by the pharmacy, each time buying a cheap item and working the vending machine story for all I was worth! I was pretty confident I wasn't getting "pre noodled" bags from the bank this time... Sometimes I only got a few as they couldn't spare them, but I was very greateful for each and every one and told each person they were a star and had made my day.
Feeling very satisfied and with my pockets bulging with fifties and assorted other change I headed back to my room with a manic smile plastered accross my face and then I saw it... The mother load! The cashiers window... Dare I? They didn't sell anything, but emboldened by my success, I said what have I got to loose, she can only say no... Do you give out change for the vending machines I humbly and politely asked? Why sure thing honey... Music to my ears! So I have spent the last few hours noodling and teaching the nurses on the ward a little about coin collecting! In my hoard I note the following:
Bonus non fifty: 1x chogm aUNC $1
Pre-'90's (so much for comments in other threads that pre-'80's were becoming scarce) 2x '71 CoA 1x '73 CoA (low mintage) 2x '76 CoA 2x '78 CoA 1x '79 CoA 1x '80 CoA double bar 1x '80 CoA 1x '81 CoA 1x '82 Comm Games 1x '83 CoA
Post '89 1x '93 (low mintage) 1x '93 faint double bar (whoo hoo, my first non-66,79 or '80 DB found in the wild) 1x millennimum 4x '01 federation CoA 2x '05 Comm Games (one very nice) 3x '10 CoA aUNC (the 3 shiny ones from the canteen) And lots more...
So, if only I had some capsules or 2x2's... Hmmmm... Necessity is the mother of all invention! I now have a bunch oh large hospital gloves in my bag with a coin safely stashed at the end of each finger! Perfect!
I feel healtheir already just from the noodling! A noodle a day keeps the doctor away!

There is always a better patient outcome if he / she a bright optimistic outlook. I think your estate is safe for at least a little while longer.....

Now I wonder how you are going to swap those fifties that you don't want for more tomorrow.

Funny how things mean different things in different countries!
In the midwestern USA (where my dad grew up) noodling is the art of catching a catfish by hand. :)

'round here noodling is a euphemism for something else entirely. And let's just say if you were noodling with the nurses and your wife found out about it that would not be a good thing.

Unwanted fifties? The horror! I find it hard to release any back into the wild... They will probably either be used as ozcoins suggests or go into the kids pocket money supply chain. Yes, I am aware of both of these other meanings for noodling, and I am sure they both predeede our use of the term here at CCF. I wonder who among us first used the term in it's coin related sense?

I too had visions of you noodling for catfish in some doctors aquarium. When I was in college I used to get change out of the vending machines specifically to search for nickels. I would simply put the coins back in the machine and get new ones over and over.

steve, steve, steve what are we to do with you ROF ..get ya off those good drugs to start, PRE doesn't mean include the 80's it means anything from the 60's to 79..I haven't say they have TAKEN them all from circulation, I have said that they are slowly taking them, so get them while you can..big difference mate. You should thank your lucky stars you found somewhere that doesn't have a turn over of coins let alone a high turn over 'cause you'll find out we're telling the truth when you get back to the real world. So make sure you get them all before you go home. Not only are they being taken out of circulation but I just found out the banks are now saying due to the NEW laws(bought in a month ago apparently) they can't give out money with out ID as big brother needs to know who's doin what, where and when..YES that is right..right from the comm horses mouth yesterday. Went to get some coinage, a hole $25 is all I wanted to change and I was told due to the new anti-laundrying laws they couldn't help..so go figure. And the next that says it will get a serve eg "so how long do you think it will take me to launder the 1.5million at $25 a hit..what a joke our country is..nanny nation gone mad..what happened to my once great nation '~' But I did manage to sweet talk the very nice people from NAB. So steve this is what I got yesterday 5 cent (7 yes 7 pre 80's) 1x 66,68/ 2x 76,77 and 1x 79 1x 80/ 2x 81/ 1x 82/ 3x 83/ 1x 84/ 2x 87/ 2x 88/ 2x89 1x90/ 1x 93/ 4x 94/ 3x 95/ 2x 96/ 4x 98/ 5x 99/ 1x 00/ 7x 01/ 5x 02/ 3x 03/ 3x 04/ 7x 06/ 2x 07/ 15x 08/ 3x 09/ 2x 10 and one that you can just tell that it's a coin, LOL. So to shorten this up I'll just put the 10 cents 3x 60&70's 47 over the 80 mark 20 cent 5x 60&70's 44x over 80's and 1 kiwi 50 cent 2x 60&70's 18x over 80's sorry about the rant but I'm over this suckhole county..I've seen it when it was good but now we have a bunch of idiots running the joint that wouldn't know their head from their you know what. And for the ladies..why would you vote for someone that's holding you girls back, eg why wouldn't you allow the FIRST female speaker of the house under your watch. Unless your own political asperations are higher than anything else..including the good of the country..I just don't get it sorry. Rant over have a good day people..and as laws says..be good to your selves and each other

LOL, sorry for misreading you Ausjack, I have been a little vague... Was just saying that I havent noticed decline in '60 and '70 coins in change, but then again, I am just one data point. As for those new rules, I am speechless... And mate you are preaching to the choir about the state of the nation, it is a disgrace... Almost enough to make a fella move to NZ, whoa, must be those drugs again he he he. (no dispecpect to out NZ friends, I just like it here.) But seriously, we are half nanny state, half police state. Our freedoms have disappeared... There was a great post on Facebook awhile ago about the 'old days', riding bikes without helmets etc. it really summed it up well, wish I had copied it. I have a tendency to get in the old soap box and rant as well so completly know how you feel and I like to see others let off steam as it makes me feel less like a grump old man and that I may actually be somewhat more reasonable because others feel the same! Rock on!
