Hello!

My friend ask me about this coin. Unfortunately for me Arabian coins are still mysterious part of numismatic world. My only thought is that it is some Abbasid dirham.

Maybe one of you will help my friend?

Arabian-Abbasid?-Unknown-Coin

Unfortunately for now:
- I have only this one photo (later maybe I'll get more)
- I don't know a thing about weight or diameter
- it looks like a cast/forgery

Thanks for help!

It's an Umayyad silver dirham (pre-'Abbasid). All the information you'd need to ID the coin is on this side; the other side is entirely taken up with quotes from the Koran. All the inscriptions seem to be readable; I'll confirm the date and mintmark when I get home from work, but I'm pretty sure the date is Year 90, Islamic calendar (AD 709).

Here's a pic I had made up some time ago, giving translations of a similar coin:

I'd be surprised if it was a cast fake. As with most mediaeval silver coins, early Islamic dirhams are very thin, and therefore difficult to make realistic casts of. However, I don't know why it's got that pink patina. Perhaps it's simply still "uncleaned".

Thanks Sap a lot for the identification and for very useful picture how to read these coins.

The patina and the surface look suspicious - but maybe this is fault of the very bad photo. I didn't have this coin in my hands so...

And I've tried to id the mint and... I have no idea.

OK, I can confirm the date and I've got the mint-name: Jayy, now known as Isfahan, in Iran. This one on zeno.ru is the same date and mint.

The letters look like it's from that timeframe, but just wondering.
