I'm trying to create a "registry" set of African American coinage. Going through the Blue Book I stumbled across the 1992 Proof $5 coin. The model looks like an African American runner. Can anybody tell me who the image is supposed to represent. I'm thinking that since the Silver Dollar was Nolan Ryan... that the $5 might have also been modeled after an iconic athlete... I don't want to assume... so any insights would be helpful.

All the information I've been able to find indicates that the image is simply of "a sprinter," so I would assume it wasn't supposed to be any athlete in particular.

See this site, for example.

According to the book Commemorative Coins of the United States,by Anthony Swiatek,"depicted is a male sprinter reminiscent of Olympic track legend Jesse Owens in a burst of speed with American flag(resembling a track)in background"
Hope this helps
