I've really become fascinated by the early half commemeratives. So much so that I think I've decided to start a set of circulated ones.

Since I know next to nothing about them and finding pricing info on them is kind of rough, I'm figuring while I'm getting started with this set I'll run possible pickups by ccf before making any decisions.

I think my goal is going to be to not have any coin grade better than VG. AG coins would receive precedence. Damaged coins need not apply.

I ran across this Stone Mountain Half and I'm wondering first off, is this a fair price and second off should I wait for something a little more circulated?

Thanks.

Have you seen Nicklsearchers circulated set? If you took on this quest there would be two of you after a very limited amount of these coins. I'm sure David will chime in and copy a link to the set.

I got this in early 2010 for about $70, and I think its AU or close. Your price doesn't seem bad for what set your trying to build.

I think the scratches on the obverse would turn me off. On the reverse I'd like to be able to read the 'Memorial to...' which is barely legible. But those might not be factors for you.

I used to live near Stone Mountain, and saw a few heavily circulated halves. They were selling $25-40 back when silver was $12-18.

I'd pass on this one and a similar one in the same price range will be along shortly.

Welcome indeed springcypress to the wonderful world of classic USA silver commemorative!

Truly ... this set of coins IMHO provides the greatest variety, coinage art and history of any specific USA set that can be assembled.

To your specific question on that E-Pray Stone Mountain ... the damage (scratches) on the obverse would turn me off ... although the $28 price is in line with what to expect for this commonly occurring circulated condition coin.

I actually have two honestly circulated Stone Mountain duplicates ... both problem free ... one FR-02 and one VG-08 ... purchased both for a little bit more than the E-Pray example you show ... so my honest advise is to hold out for a non-damaged coin.

All that said ... I am now going to hopefully add a reality check to you quest for the circulated set ... take this from a collector who has been at the same quest for over 2 years now ...

Exceptional news! Welcome any and all who wish to join our lonely commemorative pages ... and I promise to do whatever I can to comment on your acquisitions and offer any learning's from my experience.

Bummer ... that is an impossible goal. It can not be achieved as many of these coins just did not circulate.

We are not talking here about issued-for-circulation coins ... the coins in this set were sold to collectors who tended to ... well ... collect them.

Need proof ... log into the PCGS Registry Set and find the "Low Ball" #1 All-Time circulated classic USA silver commemorative set ... you will find the current champ has 8 of 50 coins graded VF35 or better ... and 3 coins AU53 or better.

Achieving a complete 50 coin circulated type set at VG or lower will not happen ... sorry.

However ... there is no reason you can not enjoy the set with a mixture of well circulated and perhaps AU coins ... cost is for sure lower than say a complete MS64 set ... and IMHO these circulated coins contain so much more character.

Do check out my updated post on the status of my circulated commemorative set ... it's in this same forum a few pages down.

Let me know if I can help in any way ...

David

Speaking from experience.... ebay is a good place to troll for the circulated ones. I would guesstimate (NickelSeacher probably has statistics on this ) that close to half of the fifty are readily available in circulated state, the problem being the more rare issues really didn't make it past we collectors to the pockets of the minions. I echo Nickel Searcher's promotion of the Commemorative series, both Early and Modern. Paleoguy45

:) It's funny. Your circulated thread was the one that made me start thinking about doing this. After looking back through your collection though I realized that VG wasn't going to happen. I was coming on here to modify my post...

And... I'll hold off on buying that Stone Mountain.
