Hi guys, I dug up a 1944 penny today and looking on ebay it looks like it could be worth something. It's in a dirty condition out of the ground though, so I don't think it's worth anything, but I thought I'd ask for an opinion. I have given it a clean with water and detergent, but it's still covered in some sort of dirt/grime.

I have taken a picture of the front and back, but the images don't capture the detail. Any thoughts on if it's worth anything.. should I clean it?

Thanks in advance guys.
Steve

Sure can do that... I've read that's about all you can do. It appears to be a rare date? I have a few coins now from detecting and they all need a good clean.. Can I use electrolysys, olive oil, distllied water or any other option?

These have a book value of $1 in VG condition.
This one would be battling to make about good after cleaning, No numistic value but if you have found it and have a liking for it and want to keep it, I would suggest putting it in olive oil for a while and see if that gets the crud off it

Ok I will drop it in some olive oil... if I can make it look better that would be good enough for me!

Hi Steve,

A few months ago I bought myself a metal detector. I went down to the beach expecting to find bucket loads of coins in the sand but all I found were a few bottle tops.

I've heard of other people finding coins while metal detecting. What sort of places do you go to?

Use vinegar and salt, then put it on ebay with a "buy it now" of $400.00

I cant even tell obverse from reverse. They minted over 30 million 1944 and even if its the rarer die variety, in this grade you'd be lucky to get 50c. I like the buy it now ebay idea. Maybe "Ancient? Australian coin RARE!" could be the title.

MobOfRoos I have found three coins in two trips on and old bush track that led to a waterfall. The coins were close to the start of the track, nothing but ring pulls once I got along the track so I'd say the tracks move over the years...

I found this site which has a comprehensive 'do this before trying this' method for each metal type:

Like I said the camera didn't pick up the detail.. it's there, just under some crud.. so I'm going to leave it in oil for now... unless someone thinks there is a faster method that won't damage the coin?
