Does anyone know how NGC scores their coins? I have an 8 Real 1824 NG M Central Amer. Rep. in AU58 that scores 593; a $1 Peso 1871 Do P Mexico Balance Scale in AU58 that scores 735; and a Brazil 960 Reis 1819R in AU58 that scores 445. The CAR 8 Real is worth 2-3 times more than either of the others but has a lower score.
I sent a very similar question to NGC about their scoring system. Based on their answers, it seems to me that they don't take into consideration the ground realities. They merely calculate their scores based on mintage numbers and the price of the coin listed in the Krause manual.
Good question. I do some compeditive sets but never got that into it really care enought to ask. I think you can request a re-score based on what ever pertinant data. The highly compeditive US registry set owners do this a lot.
They throw out a score, maybe based on KM, and the set folks help by requesting rescores.
