Hey all. I just found my susan b my mom gave me while unpacking. Unfortunately it looks like it had super glue spilled on the back of it. I have never cleaned any of my coins and was wondering if anyone could tell me about a low cost cleaning method. Thanks

Hi rainah

Im afraid that there is not much that can be done for the coin that will not be evident on it when finished.

Im sure that the coin holds some sentimental value and with that I can relate,, I have several that My father gave me that are way more valuable in sentiment than dollars and cents.

These coins are still available at the banks and a suitable replacemnet for your collection can be picked up .

Sorry that I could not be positive about cleaning the coin.

Try some Afta or nail polish remover.
The nail polish remover may have some stink and other chemicals, but it doesn't sound like the coin is very valuable.

Try acetone if you have it.

The Susan B Anthony dollar is very common coin. They discolor and stain easily. Cleaning will remove the glue but it will not restore any brilliance. I know it is one that your mom gave you but I would cash it in at the bank and replace it with an Unc. one. It will cost you only a few pennies over $1.00

Read the post called "to clean or not to clean"
As to the use of nail polish remover, most contain Acetone to a minor degree. The problem with using nail polish remover is that most brands have different chemical formulae so as to make them unique in the industry. Most do not disclose the so called secret formulae so you really do not know what you are exposing the coin to in the way of a chemical. The real problem here is that coin has sentimental value and just replacing it with a simalar coin just is not the same thing.
Try simple household items like rubbing alcohol, lemon juice, etc. That coin has no great numismatic value so you would not be hurting anything by trying. Sure would be nice to someday in the far, far future say this was from my Mom. I have coins given to me by my Dad well over 60 years ago and they are worth more to me than any coin in anyones collection.

If that's actually Superglue, acetone is the specific compound used to remove it. Not much else will.
