Hi,

I recently found out my parents bought a VERY expensive coin set for my sister and brother-in-law as a Christmas present. They bought the coins from the the shopping network (setting alarms off for me). I know the coins are being marked up, I just want to know how bad is it.

Ancient coins are not my expertise. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Here is the link to the coins: http://www.theshoppingchannel.com/C...nav=R:509016

Thank you,

The coins appear to be decent mid-grade examples and probably could be purchased elsewhere for less (perhaps half with searching or 75% with more ease?). All of these coins exist in large quantities but they are popular and probably what the sellers could find in sufficient quantities to market in this way. I don't see this particular 'deal' any more of a 'ride' than other coin deals on TV.

Reasonably nice Greek ancients. The lot shown here can be bought relatively easily for around 75% of the price shown here.

I would nevertheless check their authenticity, despite the certificate. They are a lot of extremely good forgeries of ancient Greek silver coins, and are sold to customers who know little about them. Go to a professional ancient coin dealer who knows his stuff.

They paid a bit too much but now they have been bought, may as well keep. Depends how interested you are in ancient Greek coins.

I guess if they went into an up market jewelry shop and bought solid sterling silver tableware, the profit margin would be much larger and the customer would still be satisfied.

There are two sides to a coin.

Sometimes you'll find a coin with an excellent obverse(or reverse) but the other side has a problem, or weakly struck, or way off flan etc.

This can affect the value quite a bit.

They seem to be showing only one side of the coins, on this link anyway.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I told my parents about the thoughts of everyone here, what they decide to do with the coins is up to them.

Thanks for the prompt replies, it is much appreciated, and of course Merry Christmas to everyone!
