I have a copy of 22nd ed Renniks and one of Greg Mc's 08 25 years and I've found quite a few differences in the mintage #'s, eg Renniks has the 2001 vic 20c at 2.9 mill but Greg has it at 2 neat.

So who is right and who is wrong and where do they get their figures as 900,000 seems a bit of difference.

And who, what or how do they come up with a value for a coin, is it mintage or what as some mintages seem a lot smaller than others but don't have the value and an eg is the 73 50c has a mintage of about 4 million and valued at $60 but the 85 only has 1 million and only valued at $13

I have also noted significant differences in mintage numbers for 50c coins... for each difference found I have had to do further research to determine which (sometimes neither) is accurate. Some are obvious typo's once you know the answer. I seem to remember that Renniks had a whole section there it was out by three decimal places! Can't recall it now as it was a few years ago. You need to check the RAM and PM mintage numbers to get accurate info. I have my own database of 50c coins which has been checked, re-checked and verified as many different ways as I can, so I rely on my own info for mintage numbers and other details about each coin.
Catalogue value is another thing altogether... is seems to me to be a black art...

ebay is a good place to start for learning prices, people usually know what they want to pay for coins, find a few coins and pick the average amount.
Ignore the prices in the books -- they suck normally way overpriced sometime 3 x what the normal price would be.

he he you can always ask me for a cheapskates price value.

When on ebay I usually like to buy at 50-60% of book value.

So the catalogue value is necessary for me to figure out what roughly 50-60% is!

When it comes to pennies and half penny I've found most dealers I've had business with charge between 50-70% of the maccas listed price. ebay seems to be a bit less, maybe around 40-50%?

Having said this I've found the key dates eg 1925 & 46 penny are pretty accurate in maccas. Maybe he has more examples to base the estimate on?

mmm seems a lot of ways to get the mintages and a rough value through the net so the books might be introuble, and I'm due for a new one.

I trust Greg and I know if there are errors he is willing to make changes and he is willing to work with collectors.

There appears that there is not a 100% accurate book in any country, - basically the governments and Mints publish different numbers. How do you expect the Writers, editors, and publishers to do better

It is like taking a coin to be valued at different dealers or coin shows - I have had no two people value them the same- this is especially true if they are not subject experts on they type of coin they are valuing - an American grading Australian coins and perhaps visa versa.

Now now people might think your talking about a conspiracy here and why would our very honest (sorry) government do something like that..I think they just like to do things like this to us so we're all like this or this or even like this and now I'm like this after seeing the new pay rise maybe even a little so I'd like to them all got to love these little dudes

The official mintage figures can be quite unreliable. Here are a few examples.

- 1923 half penny 1,113,000 most of which were actually dated 1922.
- 1930 Penny had an offical mintage of 0 circulation coins

- 1983 & 1984 20c, 55,113,000 and 27,820,000 almost entire production was melted down.

Confusion also happens because RAM annual reports issue for each financial year rather than the calender year and they will often release coins into circulation which were minted a few years previously.

As for the values of coins in the books, these are quoted as retail prices. So to get the actual value of the coin you need to subtract the 10% GST and the retailers overheads and profit margin.

Prices on ebay reflect a 10 day auction price and are never going to truly reflect the value of a coin. The greater risk the buyer takes in buying a coin on ebay is reflected in the lower prices. When I see some of the obvious fakes, the terrible photography and the blatant over-grading its a wonder that some people ever sell anything at all.

Yeah I just don't get a lot of this..how can you have no idea what mintages you've put out or have so many differences. I can see how prices goes with the flow of the market but fairdink the mintages should be something that they know with all their high tech stuff..well one would thing.

Don't most produces be it food or what ever, have a pretty good idea of what they've produced. Especially when the gov wants to know everything produced so they can have a little nibble

I agree, they would have to keep pretty accurate figures otherwise it would be too easy for RAM workers to take some of their work home with them.

I don't really have a preference but it'd be nice if we could get more accurate info as I'm sort of into low mintages but it makes it hard when you look at one book then the other and go WHAT THE..why is it so.
