Hello All:
I am also a newbie, however my Dad is an avid collector. At his suggestion, in 1995 I bought two American eagle 10th Anniversary Proof Bullion Coin sets. Both sets are W stamped and include the 1oz Silver eagle, the 1oz Gold Eagle, .5 oz Gold Eagle, .25Oz gold eagle, and 1/10 oz. Gold Eagle. All coins in covers, in the mint issued binder, with corresponding certificates of authenticity and in stellar condition. I am looking to value these sets. I had taken them to a dealer who was recommended to me and frankly, the guy was trying to rob me. Not a good experience. So, any input is appreciated.

Looking at completed ebay listings, looks like they are selling for between $5000-$8000. Hope this helps.

What was the dealer offering you in essence of "robbing"?

Most of the value for that set is in the 1995-W Silver Eagle, it is the key date for the entire Silver Eagle series and was only available in that set. It is a very good thing that you followed your dad's suggestion, that set has appreciated much more than most other modern coins

$3450 was the offer, and the gold/silver weight itself was over $2600.00. I was pretty unhappy with the guy because he was recomended by a friend and he certainly was less than upfront with me. I did tell my buddy what took place and he was pretty upset since he had suggested I go see this dealer. That's why I am here. I could have my dad do it, but he would not be happy I am even looking at the values and prospects of possibly selling. I do appreciate the input, this is an interesting site/forum.

Not sure on the math here. Wouldn't the gold/silver melt be around $3K per set? The dealer certainly gave you a lowball offer and you could ask for $5K/set and see what they say.

Your best bet is selling them yourself and not working through a middle-man. If you do sell to a dealer, give Modern Coin Mart a call. They should have a better offer.
