So I went to the shop during lunch and picked up 13 oz's of silver bullion. Out of the 13, the usual maples and prospectors I snag immediately.

He goes to tell me he has a silver 1 oz Krugerrand and "it's in the back" - he comes back and presents it to me. He asks for spot - no premium. I take it.

I go looking in his regular silver tray, and I found another one. Even he was shocked.

Has anyone seen these before?

Are they worth anything?

I found it very interesting so I picked up both.

Any guidance / thoughts or comments appreciated!

Never heard of a silver K-Rand before this. The word "commemorative" on the reverse indicates that this is a special medallion and not a coin. The sweet part is that it does show the metal its made of, the weight, and the purity. While none of this is proof of anything, it is good to see it on the medallion itself. My guess is that this medallion is legit but I would want to measure and weigh it to make sure that it has the proper weight for a silver object of this size. If it is what it says it is, it was quite a find at no premium.

Rest in Peace

there are a number of privately minted silver Krugerrands. 1oz like the one you've got there and ~21g versions. Most were minted in 1982-83 to commemorate the 15th-16th anniversary of the gold Krugerrand.

However, these silver rounds are technically not Krugerrands. "Krugerrand" is a trademarked name that is reserved for the use of the South African Mint, and the mint never issued any silver rounds. So, these silver krugers are really just opportunistic products created and traded privately.

But hey, silver's silver (a lot of fakes out there though so might want to check the weight and composition out), and these rounds are pretty nice looking!
