Hi guys

Was looking at my Canadian 1937 dot nickel in my Charlton Cat.

1 - One said 1937 dot

and the other said

2 - 1937 dot matte

What is matte...?

Matte is a coin finish used on specimens sets that year. The overall coin has a dull bland appearance that is more or less uniform across the coin.

I'm not a fan.

The ol' Charlton Catalogue's definition is:

A proof finish in which the planchet and dies are not polished, but finished with a fine grain surface ... I actually kinda like the look of the matte finish (it's obviously just a personal taste thing)

Wert, this is an example (the only one I own) of a specimen finish used in many modern sets. The combination of the relief and background finishes varies over the past decades. A specimen finish for a '37 was a 'frost' on 'frost' finish.

Anyway, this coin was found in a roll of circulated nickels during one of my frenzied roll searches a couple of years ago.

Now I see, since you posted the picture...Almost looks like some one dragged sand paper across the surface...If you know what I mean.

You know I believe I have seen that finish in a couple of my nicer coins...Going to have to do a check again.

Nice coin.

@Wert As soon as you see the coin it stands out like a sore thumb to all the other nickels.

I've also seen it called a "sandblast" finish.
