An upgrade to my 1843 SL Half Dollar!

Please let me know what grade you would assign to the new one.

Thanks for looking!

Nice upgrade! I would guess AU50. BTW, what's going on with the reverse shield?

Low to Mid AU. I'm also curious about the reverse shield. Does anyone have any information on this?

I seriously don't know... Here's a closer picture of the shield.

It almost looks like die damage the way the shield lines terminate at that point.

I would go with AU-53. May have been lightly cleaned but it is still a very nice coin!

I was browsing Dr Eugene Bruder's (Typecoins.com) inventory of Seated Liberty half dollars and noted this 1858 SL Half:

http://www.typecoins.com/store/product?pid=74591

The reverse shield marks, which he claims are a result of a die clash, appears VERY close to what my 1843 has. I'm now thinking the shield disparity may be a die clash versus a solder-drip or PMD.

Thoughts?

Here's the obverse flip and the reverse to compare where the clash would be.

I think it was coppercoins who had an overlay routine to mirror obv/rev.

I dont think that's PMD...but I'm not sure it's a die clash either.

here's the grid showing same area on both sides but this doesn't allow for the possibility of a rotated die if this is a clash
