The first time my ebay search for "Gold Coast" coins actually comes up with a coin from the Gold Coast, Africa (rather than tourist dollars from the Gold Coast, Australia) and it's a Chinese seller! Talk about a let-down! Here be the auction in question.A genuine one in that condition is probably a $250-$300 coin, so I assume it's a fake. The ebay name "oldart" doesn't fill me with confidence, either. Now, I don't really mind the fakemasters making bogus American or Spanish dollars, but now it's getting personal... this is a coin I want! The guy's also got a bunch of Spanish-american Pillar dollars for sale - I assume they're bogus, too? Unfortunately you have to get used to it. The fakes from China are getting better and are becoming more widespread. The golden rule, I have learned is "don't buy for sellers in China". Anytime I see Western Union or Bank Transfer as a payment option, I admit to being a little suspicious.

Isn't it amazing how so many old rare coins end up in China and are being sold for so cheap after sooo many years. LOL This 1818 coin looks to be in fantastic condition, with a real lack of bumps and scratches for the amount of wear that is shown. Every coin I see on ebay from "China", I just pass over. Far too many fakes and if the photo is a genuine coin, their is every chance you'll not receive it. With so many scams around it must make it very difficult for every genuine Chinese collector who is trying to deal on ebay.

Some of the fakes I have seen on ebay are much better than the ones I saw a year ago. They aren't as crude as they used to be. I have even heard the weight is the same.

Update: fast forward a couple of months, and it (or one much like it) is now on the secondary market in the USA: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/1818-Gold-Co...AU_W0QQitemZ330097210552QQihZ014QQcategoryZ533QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem FORVM watchlist of known, intentionally fraudulent, fake-sellers. The guy even has a recent e-Bay neutral feedback complaining of a deceptive counterfeit.

Regardless of where the auction is coming from, I tend to stay away from any auctions that do not show everything. User ID kept private, then feedback for the seller does not show any of the completed auction listings, etc. I see no reason for this in any of the things that I buy, so I steer clear just the same as if it was coming from a place like China....

Sap, I'm sorry to hear that the problem with counterfeiting is starting to hit close to home for you. As a spanish Bust 8 Reales series collector - it's actually a part of the experience, for me.
Question about this very interesting coin - was it really struck in a collar, originally? The first link definitely would have put me off with that portrait of good ol' George, but the second one looked O.K. (for someone who never seen one before).

I think so - these would have been struck in Britain, probably at the Birmingham mint like the earlier series were. Here's one on the Stack's archive, nice & shiny, didn't quite make the $500 estimate. Here's another on CoinArchives, estimate £200, knocked down for £2300. Must have been some mad keen Gold Coast enthusiasts there that day...

I really like the design - I'll have to keep an eye out when I'm at local coin shows.
Thanks, Sap!
