Greetings from Canada!

I have an 1806 George III penny which looks rather strange. It was from the estate of a former Salvation Army officer who was active in the very early 20th Century. One must assume it was found in a collection box.

The coin is 34mm and weighs 16.3 grams, both of which measurements appear on the low side for this date. It also looks like it was cast rather than struck. My overall impression is that it is an imitation, and that it was cast in North America.

Anyone have an opinion?

TIA

to CCF!

My opinion is that it is badly worn and has chunks missing from it, which easily would account for the low weight and size, and that it is pretty badly beaten up, so much that a fender washer would be easier to authenticate than this coin. Value? Probably metal content. But others may differ ...

with pls. The heavy wear on the coin would make it lighter and smaller. I'm not sure that anyone would counterfeit such a small denomination coin that doesn't have much purchasing power. 1806 is a common date and can be found for sale in fine condition for only a few dollars. I find these, in the same condition as yours, in dealers junk bins sometimes for about $.15. It looks real to me.

Struck. Heavily Worn. $1.00 = worth.
