Looks to me like a hard hit from a larger reeded coin.

No saying you're wrong. these questions are for informational purposes since I have never see anything like this.

if the coin was hit by a larger reeded coin wouldn't there be more marks on the coin then just the D.

I do actually agree with you that this is not a RPM. the D's look nothing a like. if it was a RPM they would be the exact same D right?

"If" it is an extra mint mark the mint could have tried to abrade the error and left some of the mint mark. It is definitely not an RPM. If it is a mark from a reeded coin why is the extra D raised?

I don't have the luxury of being able to see the coin in 3-D, so I cannot disagree with the part about the mark being raised.

What I can say is that it is not a mintmark - a misplaced mintmark would be the exact same shape and size as the mintmark already on the coin. Any punching/repunching is generally done with the same punch, and even if it is a different punch, they only used one style of mintmark that year.

The reason the mark could be raised is pretty simple to me - if you hit a flat pliable surface hard enough, it will crater the surface and the edges of a crater are always raised. It looks like your coin took a dig from something - whether it's a larger reeded coin or not is a debatable issue I would not argue. It was a guess. The part that was not a guess is that the mark is damage to the coin - not a repunched mintmark.

Just wondering if this could be a dropped letter error?. Or would that be in-cused? Thanks,
John1
