I found a batch of about 30 very nice war time nickels in a small box marked $1.50 Each
I bought them all and a couple of them had weird toning like this on them, When I asked the
shop owner (A friend of mine) how he came by them, he told me a lady had brought them in
with a bunch of other silver. Still have not figured out what it may have come in contact with to
cause this. Kind of cool though to look at.

Not the greatest photo but its the best one I have at the moment. Had to photoshop because the raw photo looked all washed out but it shows the true color a lot better.
The reverse is just plain silver.

OK, two of my favorite toners in my collection, both acquired recently. I kept the holder in the pic for the Ike to show it is toning on its own in the original holder. The colors are a LOT more vivid than I was able to get in the pics. Same for the nickel.

The blue that can be seen in the close ups is across the
entire coin and can be seen in hand.

I have experimented a little in the past with cleaning, and toning coins so I could get the feel of what they look like and so I could spot them when buying them in the future. Here is a Lincoln Cent I artificially toned.

The Jefferson nickel looks like cooking oil and then added a heat source to the coin.

I don't have a clue how to "tone" one. I found that wheat inside a 1000 count bag awhile back.
