Please forgive me if the ? I have has been asked before. I've been offered a few 8 Reale coins that appear to be in VG-VF condition. I assume they are all common coins as he isn't asking much for them. I've dealt with this man for years but I just developed an interest in these coins he offered me when I asked him so I'm not worried about authenticity. My question is...what is a fair price to pay him?
Thanks, Erik

Erik - It's impossible to give an answer to this without knowing what 8 reales coins they are. The years and mint would help. There is a big difference in price between the types of 8 reales.

I agree with Larry. But speaking very generally: 1607-1771 - $350, 1772-1821 - $60, 1825-1897 $40.

The prices do seem low but I'm sure they are just ballpark figures. We would need more info from the OP for any more accurate prices.

OK, thanks folks. These coins I'm looking to buy are I'm sure all very common but, I guess I better get a book for more info.
Thank you, Erik

BTW, take care when buying those, there are many cheap (and expensive) copies circulating.

1893S - While they may be common none of the 8 reales coins are cheap. And if they are 200 year or older coins I don't consider those common. Check out ebay prices to get a better idea or just tell us what they are so we can give you a better answer. I have found that books don't help much for pricing them and the books are not cheap either.

Really? I thought I was on the high side for prices. These are my last Mexico 8R purchases by type:

$300 for a 1652/1 8R cob at Ponterio's, but that was few years ago (full date, cleaned I'm sure).

Last month a couple lots of 8R Dos Mundos set me back about $200 per coin from the Stacks Bowers Ponterio auction. Take out the rough one, say $225 per coin, some cleaned.

This summer at Coin O Rama in San Diego, 10 8R portraits cost me just under $300, figure $30 per coin, cleaned, some chops. I got a nice 1787 8R at the spring Long Beach for $55.

Today I bought a 1849 Ca RG 8R with a cool die break for $39 at Treasure Trove in San Diego.

These good, not great, deals for coins in around fine condition.
