This 1996 Lincoln weighs in normal, at 2.52 grams, yet, shows a distinctly darker obverse than reverse...either end of roll toning, or, is there a possibility of a missing zinc layer with this one? My hunch is toning, if missing a layer of some sort, it should weigh much less. Opinions welcome. Thanks
Looks like toning to me. The obverse must have been exposed but the reverse was protected. The coin might have been in a coin board that wasn't stored properly. Just a guess.
These coins are also not clad. They are copper plated. Clad is a method of placing sheets of different metals together and bonding them with extreme force. Plating is essentially dipping blanks of one metal into a molten bath of a different metal.

Plating is not dipping blanks into a molten bath. Electroplating is a plating process in which metal ions in a solution are moved by an electric field to coat an electrode. For more, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electroplating
Electroplating can also deposit precise amounts of metal. By measuring the current and time (which together make energy), the amount of metal transferred can be very precisely determined and controlled.
